Flourishing Oceans

The Sustainable Fisheries program is part of Minderoo’s Flourishing Oceans initiative, which works to accelerate action to restore our ocean to a healthy, thriving state. We use evidence-based advocacy to engage governments, businesses, and communities to combat unsustainable fishing practices and policy. We have an internal team of 10, as well as a global network of partners.

About the role

Ideally based in Perth with the option of being based in Melbourne, Sydney or Hobart this newly created role will work in partnership with the Research Manager to develop the Sustainable Fisheries program’s advocacy strategy, oversee its implementation and take the initiative’s impact to the next level.

Your key responsibilities will Include:

  • Lead the development and implementation of an overarching advocacy strategy that will drive the Sustainable Fisheries program’s engagement with governments, the private sector and civil society.
  • Develop and lead the Sustainable Fisheries program’s strategy on disrupting the illegal fishing sector, including working to keep illegally sourced products out of the marketplace and eradicate forced labour from the seafood supply chain.
  • Grow the Sustainable Fisheries program’s capacity as a thought leader and partner for advancing transformative solutions to fisheries governance, through business and public policy.
  • Work closely with the Flourishing Oceans CEO and Sustainable Fisheries Research Manager to build the program’s brand on a global scale.
  • Exemplify and lead in accordance with the Minderoo Foundation’s values and promote the Flourishing Ocean’s team culture and vision.
  • Where appropriate, represent the Flourishing Oceans initiative at public forums, events, and in media.
  • Travel nationally and Internationally as and when required.

About you

To be successful in this role you will have experience working in ocean conservation, specifically fisheries sustainability and social responsibility. Have strong networks in business and civil society sectors.

You have strong writing ability and impeccable communication skills. You must be a confident public speaker and be able to produce targeted communications for diverse stakeholder groups.

Of vital importance is that you thrive in an environment that tackles new challenges, have a flexible and adaptable working style, including working remotely. You are a committed team player and have strong relationship-building skills.
