Minderoo Foundation is a modern philanthropic organisation. We take on tough, persistent issues with the potential to drive massive change. We incubate ideas and accelerate impact. We push the limits of what is believed possible. Minderoo Foundation is independent, forward thinking and seeks effective, scalable solutions. We are proudly Australian, and one of Asia’s largest philanthropies, with AUD $2 billion committed to a range of global initiatives. Our team comprises over 75 employees across seven locations.

The Minderoo OceanOmics program will create a world-class integrated ocean monitoring platform to inform decision-making in ocean resource and ecosystem management. Deploying a range of advanced molecular and genomics techniques that will be adapted or developed to monitor the planet’s oceans by sampling individual whole cells and cell-free genetic material from a range of marine habitats.

About the role

Under the direction of the OceanOmics Research Director and Senior Research Fellows, the Research Officer will participate in the conception and execution of a variety of experimental procedures focused on using marine cell-free and cell-bound DNA in combination with next-generation sequencing to understand and advance marine ecology.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing materials for and conduct onshore and at-sea experiments.
  • Collecting and processing of seawater samples for isolation of cell-free and cell-bound genetic material.
  • Performing various cellular & molecular biology techniques, including DNA extraction and amplification, and library preparation for high-throughput sequencing (e.g. metabarcoding, mito genomes and WGS).
  • Interpreting results and maintain complete and accurate records of experiments conducted and data obtained.

About you

You will have a PhD in a relevant discipline, such as molecular biology, molecular ecology, marine genomics, or environmental genetics.

Or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training. You need to have a demonstrated experience with cellular & molecular biology techniques applied to biodiversity monitoring, including environmental DNA approaches. Have experience organising and conducting fieldwork and working at sea.

Demonstrated understanding of troubleshooting and development of sampling & processing methodologies.
