About the role

In this role you would be part of the R&D Engineering team based in Lane Cove, and report to the New Products Program Manager.   You will collaborate closely within the Technology Development & Commercialisation team as well as across the broader Scientific, Quality & Regulatory and Design and Development teams.  

This role will require an enthusiastic, innovative and hands-on approach to embedded software, user interface development and product prototyping, with the ability to leverage your R&D experience and bring new insights to existing challenges.  You will be a Subject Matter Expert, and will have the flexibility and autonomy to create, drive and implement solutions, architecture and frameworks in conjunction with your team to support and shape the future of the business.

In this role you will be responsible for design and development of software/firmware control and data acquisition for technology development test rigs and prototypes, with possible role expansion through to complete product design, development and transfer to manufacturing.

The Key Accountabilities and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Designing, architecting and developing software/firmware according to user and technology prototype requirements as part of cross-functional teams that include mechanical and electrical engineers, chemists, microbiologists and laboratory technicians.   
  • Driving, developing and standardising software/firmware platforms and frameworks (libraries, packages, tools and instruments) to be used for test rigs and prototypes.
  • Innovating to provide unique solutions to customer needs in the infection control arena.
  • Working with the design team to formulate engineering solutions to complex problems in new and existing products.  
  • Characterising new technologies by designing and implementing novel test methods.
  • Diagnosing system failure modes, assessing risks and devising clever solutions.
  • Facilitating the integration of early product embodiments into the Design & Development team.
  • Working cross-functionally across other engineering areas and the science team.  
  • Conducting verification testing and reporting of test results.
  • Co-ordinating documentation and review of test results in accordance with FDA QSR and EN ISO 13485 requirements as needed.
  • Compliance with Quality Management Systems policies and procedures.

About you

You are a qualified Electrical or Electronics Engineer (or related discipline), preferably with Masters or PhD postgrad qualification.  You have a successful track record with regard to problem-solving and practical solutions to R&D design challenges and your experience includes:

  • Embedded software/firmware design and development experience, with FPGA experience an advantage.  
  • Hands-on programming experience with C, C++ or Python either in a commercial environment or a research setting (eg as a postgraduate or postdoctoral student), and experience with tool selection for managing and curating scientific data and visualising results.
  • Test system and hardware prototyping experience with a wide variety of programs and tools eg. LabView, NI tools, LabJack, Arduino, Microcontroller, Raspberry PI or equivalents.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a similar role; Medical Device industry experience (eg with IEC 62304 and ISO 13485) preferred but not essential.
